Diwali is one of the biggest and brightest of Hindu festivals.
The name derives from "deep" meaning light.
The Diwali festival usually occurs in late October or early November. It falls on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik. Thus, the day varies each year.
While the day of the festival varies each year, the celebration and the brightness of the festival does not change,
Diwali is celebrated around the world by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains for different reasons with the main theme of triump of light over darkness and good over evil.
According to the Hindu legend of Lord Rama and his wife Sita, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and his younger brother, Lakshman, to their kingdom from a 14 year exile after defeating the demon king Ravana.
For the festival, houses are decorated with candles ("deeps") and colorful lights. Against a backdrop of fireworks, families and friends feast and share sweets and gifts.
It is also traditional for homes to be cleaned and painted and new clothes to be worn for the festival.
